Demosthenes Practicing Speaking

Welcome to With a Mouth Full of Stones. Please allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Ray Wells. I am in my late 30s, with a family (married, two [step-]children, with two cats, one dog, a goldfish, and a guinea pig). I live in a rural college town near the geographic center of the state of Washington. I am an employed job seeker, trying to get a new job that will help make paying the bills easier. Politically, I am unabashedly liberal, but try to be realistic (which living in a conservative, rural community helps make possible.

My goal with this blog is to touch on two topics very important to me: job search issues and politics.I ask all my readers to be polite and treat what I (and any commenters) have to say with respect. Nothing I have to say will be perfect (as politics is the art of the possible, nothing in politics ever is). But if I didn’t think it worthy of consideration, I wouldn’t put it out there.

The title of this blog refers to my stutter/stammer (whichever you want to call it), which I try to mask in most of my life (pretty successfully, I think). I probably will not refer to it much, specifically. For those of you who don’t know, having a speech impediment makes speaking you mind difficult, even when it appears that you are speaking fluently — as you have to pay careful attention to how you will say what you want to say, which distracts you from saying it. According to legend, the ancient Greek orator Demosthenes overcame his stammer by practicing talking on the beach, with a mouth full of pebbles. Here, I am on the beach, with a mouth full of stones, making myself heard.
